Varicose Vains: The Complicated Story

A number of different diseases affect the veins in your body, and are caused by a variety of different things. Many of these diseases are caused by the same underlying condition that causes varicose veins, but the cause of the varicose veins can be found by looking at your symptoms.

Varicose Veins: What Is It?

The term varicose veins is a medical term that can be used to describe veins that have narrowed, become narrow, and become blocked. Some of the conditions that cause varicose veins are caused by diseases that are commonly called diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or high blood sugar. Sometimes, when someone has a chronic disease, or gets sick frequently, the veins in the body can get narrowed and blocked.

If you see your doctor because you are having severe symptoms of varicose veins, they may want to examine your body and do blood tests. In most cases, your doctor will diagnose varicose veins when they notice an increase in blood flow to your legs, feet, or ankles, even if you've not felt any symptoms. The doctor may have to do a blood test, and may even need to do an x-ray to look for the veins in your legs.
